Zcash & private money
2025–My dad came to America to give his kids a better life. He succeeded.
I’m trying to visualize my future child. What contribution would I want to give them?
Setting a kid up for the stable landscape of Pax Americana feels incorrect in today’s world. Not in a world where we should picture the biggest companies as factories which spawn millions of guys who live inside computers.
There’s too many highly dynamic, live technologies in the mix. Receding institutions and populations on one side and the spectre of Authoritarianism with Anglo Characteristics on the other.
This stage sets my belief in the value of dynamic optionality over stable consistency.
This brings me to Zcash.
I used to place dynamic optionality value squarely on Bitcoin. But Bitcoin is lacking in several key areas.
- Lacking privacy matters in the long term view. An asset that’s been shielded for 20 years sounds better than one that’s been shielded for zero. ZEC has managed to thread a needle of privacy via what seems to be legitimate cryptography while simultaneously acquiring an institutional stamp of approval that other privacy projects like XMR and Tornado struggled to achieve.
- Lacking adaptability matters in a dynamic world. Zcash developers confronted with a problem sought out the best AI in the world to help fix it. The community seems to take seriously the need for transaction throughput to rise in order to generate enough volume and fees for a protocol to last. Bitcoin by contrast historically championed its ossification as a feature, a showcase of its resilience.
The majority of capital in the world is unaware of the fact you can have private money storable anywhere, accessible anywhere, at any time.
Cryptocurrency has been memetically contaminated, torn, tarnished, and tattered, replete with the ugly marks and scars of a million opportunists.
That doesn’t change the fact that if communists or nazis or drones or robots or fucking ALIENS were knocking at my door, there is only one asset that can be privately transferred to my family anywhere they may be.
ZEC is asymmetric.
